The Shifting Landscape of Credit Card Benefits
Previously, many cards offered perks like airport lounge access and unlimited food offers, even without a minimum spend. Now, companies like HDFC Millennia are requiring a ₹1 lakh spend over three months for lounge access, while Axis Bank’s Flipkart card has similar restrictions. The rules have changed dramatically, from basic credit cards to premium invite-only cards.
Many cards have been devalued; however, a few have retained their value due to competitive pressures from companies trying to attract customers.
The “Must-Have” Credit Card Trio:
Instead of juggling multiple cards, I recommend focusing on three that offer maximum value across various spending categories. These three cover online shopping (Flipkart, Amazon, Myntra), grocery deliveries (Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket, Zepto), utility bill payments (electricity, mobile recharge, gas), fuel, airport lounges (without excessive spending restrictions), and movie tickets (with significant discounts and buy-one-get-one offers).
My Top 3 Credit Card Recommendations:
HDFC Bank Swiggy Card:
HDFC Bank Swiggy card .Recently updated terms and conditions have removed Swiggy money; however, you still get up to ₹1500 cashback (real money) directly added to your statement. This includes 10% cashback on Instamart and 5% on other online spends (up to ₹1500 each). Potentially saving you ₹36000-₹42000 annually depending on your spending habits. The annual fee is only ₹500 + GST, making it worthwhile. However, it lacks movie and utility bill benefits. This card is best for those with significant online spending (over ₹30,000 monthly). If you spend less, the SBI Cashback card might be a better option.
Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card:
Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card The annual fee is ₹500. If you use Airtel services (mobile or broadband), this card is a no-brainer. Get 25% cashback on Airtel recharges (approx. ₹3000 annually). Additionally, you receive 10% cashback on utility bill payments made through the Airtel Thanks app (up to ₹3000 annually). You also get 10% cashback on Zomato, Swiggy, and BigBasket orders. Lounge access is limited, requiring ₹50,000 spending every three months.
My Zone Credit Card:
My Zone Credit Card Often offered as a lifetime free card (check the website for current offers), this card is excellent for movie and food discounts. You receive ₹120 off on Swiggy and a buy-one-get-one offer on Paytm movie tickets, totaling approximately ₹5280 in annual savings. It also includes a one-year subscription to Sony LIV. Lounge access is also subject to spending restrictions.
Addressing Lounge Access Limitations
Many cards now require substantial minimum spending for lounge access (₹50,000 – ₹1,00,000 per quarter). This renders many lounge benefits impractical for average users. The Airtel Axis Bank card, while offering lounge access, is limited by the high spending requirement.
Additional Cards to Consider:
AU Small Finance Bank Excite Credit Card:
This card is a replacement for an existing AU credit card (not a standalone application). It offers lifetime free membership and eight airport lounge visits annually. Offers variable cashback based on spending.
HSBC Cashback Card:
Offers no spending restrictions for lounge access (annual fee: ₹999 + GST). Provides 10% cashback on Swiggy, Zomato, and BigBasket (approx. ₹12000 annually).
Tata Neu Infinity Credit Card:
Eight lounge accesses annually (two per quarter). Offers lifetime free memberships sometimes. Provides 15% cashback on UPI transactions, jewelry, and education expenses, along with 5% on BigBasket.
Fuel Cards:
For fuel and gas, consider:
SBI BPCL Octane Credit Card: 6.5% cashback on fuel and Bharat Gas. Annual fees waived if you spend ₹2,00,000 annually; otherwise, ₹1500 annual fees.
IDFC FIRST Bank Power Plus Credit Card: 6.5% cashback on HP Petrol pumps and Bharat Gas. Offers 25% cashback up to ₹100 on Paytm movie bookings.
Conclusion
The credit card landscape is constantly evolving. By carefully considering your spending habits and focusing on cards that offer consistent value without restrictive terms and conditions, you can maximize your savings.
